In the year of 1906 Alberto Santos-Dumont, Brazilian aviation pioneer, expressed his problem with the pocket watch he was expected to rely upon, whilst flying his fixed wing aircraft through the skies. The complaint was made to Louis Cartier who envisaged the answer to his problems - a sophisticated, highly legible dial which secured to the wrist with a black strap and a small buckle. The innovation would eradicate the complications encountered by the pilot and many others in his situation - the rummaging around in his shirt or jacket, searching for his pocket watch, whilst wasting valuable time that could be spent on making important split-second decisions. 

The Santos de Cartier watch remedied the concerns and insufficiencies experienced with the pocket watch, and were the first innovation by Cartier to really popularise the wristwatch for men.
