The beauty and opulence of Lalique designs are owed to the company's founder, René Lalique. In 1882 he became a freelance designer for several top jewellery houses in Paris and four years later established his own workshop offering jewellery & homeware.

The name Lalique has long been associated with the wonder of transparency and jewellery brilliance. Since Rene Lalique first began specialising in the artistry of glass making, he began implementing many of his inspirations into his designs – namely aspects of nature taken from his surrounding environment. Many of his heirs shared the same creative flair, and after the death of his father, Rene began refining his skills and techniques in jewellery making. As an independent designer for some of the great jewellery Houses such as Jacta, Cartier and Boucheron, Rene returned home to France after two years studying away in England, to take over the workshops of jeweller Jules Destape on Place Gaillon in Paris. Some of his first designs using glass were created around 1890 when Lalique had reached his early twenties. Gold, opals, diamonds, pearls and amethysts were also used to embellish his jewellery.
