OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch

The OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch is a legendary chronograph that enjoys an iconic status amongst some of the world's most recognisable luxury wristwatches. With a Moonwatch strapped to his wrist, astronaut Buzz Aldrin first stepped onto the moon to make history on June 20th 1969 and ever since then, this men's OMEGA chronograph has become synonymous with its contribution to manned space missions, not to mention its unmistakable style as a coveted collectable.

Chosen for its reliability, superior performance and legible dial, the watch is still used by NASA today. What may surprise some is that the original OMEGA Speedmaster Professional watch was designed for use on the racetrack. Its stopwatch timings and a clear trio of sub-dials constituted the perfect timekeeping tool for measuring laps at motorsport racing events.

For avid Speedmaster Moonwatch fans, OMEGA releases a special-edition version of this popular chronograph most years - some limited-edition models of which are considered highly desirable by collectors and fans. The OMEGA Snoopy makes for an incredible investment piece, with many rare and sought-after iterations of the Speedmaster Moonwatch proving difficult to find on the second hand market. As an official UK stockist, our selection includes the classic stainless steel design, iterations on nylon straps and leather bands, models crafted from the brand’s proprietary 18ct Sedna Gold, and even the newest deep green dial version of the Speedmaster.

Despite this exemplary growth of the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch collection, the maison has always maintained a clear commitment to preserving the original and much-loved characteristics of this popular chronograph watch. As a result, the case, crystal and manual calibre of the Speedmaster have remained largely unchanged over the years, with models like the ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001 still featuring the same Hesalite crystal top used in the collection’s much earlier models.

An alternative version of this watch, with all classic elements still intact, is the sapphire crystal iteration, nicknamed the “New Moon” watch. With the launch of these newer versions back in 2021, OMEGA also replaced the tried and tested calibre 861 with the new and updated Co-Axial calibre 3861 which comes with certification from METAS - the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology. Fitted with a silicon hairspring, this certification represents the movement’s innovative resistance to the damaging effects caused by magnetic fields, whilst also delivering extraordinary precision.

The evolution of the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch collection into this younger “New Moon” version also sees the return of the DON (or “dot over 90”) - a feature that many devoted Speedmaster fans consider a reflection of a true tribute to Speedmaster watches from the 1970s. Other popular features of the classic Moonwatch are present, such as the familiar “step dial” with recessed sub-counters that look sunken into the surface of the display.

Most importantly the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch has remained a consistent design for over 60 years. Its white accented black dial with a surrounding black tachymeter bezel, chronograph counters laid out in the classic 3-6-9 format, and stainless steel case perhaps denoting the most classic of all.
