OMEGA didn’t wait too long into 2021 before unveiling the new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021 watch. The Speedmaster that we have come to know and love today has remained practically unchanged since the ’60s (apart from some minor adjustments including the watch’s presentation box, some bracelet updates and, of course, a switch from the prior tritium to the modern Super-LumiNova material). The implementation of the “Professional” reference in the title of the watch came in conjunction with the lyre-style twisted lugs and the asymmetrical case with a protective structure around the pushers and crown.
The width of the case also grew from 39.7mm to 42mm during this time. What collectors are wanting to know about the new 2021 iteration is “what has changed?”. To answer the question simply – a lot. But fear not – the style and iconic appeal of the much-loved Speedy remains the same. Changes (although no major ones) have been made to the case, the bezel, the crown, the dial, the pushers, the caseback, the hands, the bracelet and its clasp. As every avid Speedmaster fan would agree, OMEGA has worked too hard on the icon to make any drastic changes to the design of one of the most highly sought-after luxury watches in the entire world.
The case:
The new OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021 watch ref: 310.30.42.50.01.002 honours a vintage-inspired feel that beckons to the signature ST 105.012 model. The short twisted lugs, the asymmetrical case (with crown and push-piece protectors), the bevel that runs from lug to lug, and a mix of brushed and polished surfaces are all present. The model retains its 42mm diameter but boasts a slimmer case height of 13.2mm, changing the perception of the watch on the wrist. A subtly reshaped case like the Snoopy 50th anniversary design can also be appreciated, along with slightly shorter push-pieces and a wider crown.
The bezel:
One major update to be acknowledged in the new OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021 ref: 310.30.42.50.01.002 is the markings on its bezel. Instead of a black polished ceramic bezel, OMEGA has returned to the true black anodised aluminium insert. The fact that the latter is less glossy contributes to its beautiful original style. For an instrument watch like the Speedy – this finish on the bezel is respectful and fitting to the much-loved classic. A dot over the 90 known as the DON marking and a diagonal one over the 70 – references to the original 1970 models also. The 2021 OMEGA Speedmaster watch is still offered in a hesitate crystal option and a “sapphire sandwich” option. This model, the sapphire crystal variant, offers a clear view of the performance of the mechanical movement that beats within its 50-meter water-resistant stainless steel casing. This sapphire version, which comes with a brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet (as opposed to the fully brushed steel bracelet version of the hesitate model), is equipped with a polished OMEGA symbol on its black dial. The Geneva stripes and bevelled edges of the co-axial movement are a highlight to enjoy through the transparent caseback of this sapphire model, which is also attached to a double stepped caseback reminiscent of said 1960’s model.
The dial:
The new OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021 watch ref: 310.30.42.50.01.002 has the beautiful stepped dial notable on previous models developed between the 1960s and early 1970s. After 46 years of the flat dial, this marks a welcomed return of a popular feature. Still made from embossed brass with a matt black finish, the dial has that classic grained texture. The counters are recessed, offering small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute sub-dial at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. The new Speedy also has a redesigned chronograph hand characterised by a larger diamond luminous tip. Granular white paint is still applied to the main Professional style hands, and the centre section of the small sub-dial hands are now made of metal as opposed to painted. Super-LumiNova coated accents on the dial, as always, offer assistance in low-light conditions or during the night.
The movement:
The OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 which includes all of the brands latest technologies developed over the past decade. It comes as another welcomed modification to the timepiece in over 40 years. Visually close to the old movement, the hand-wound engine still features a cam mechanism and a horizontal clutch. Resistant to magnetic fields up to 15, 000 gauss and beating at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, the movement provides a 50-hour power reserve and incorporates a hacking seconds mechanism that has never been used in the Speedmaster before.
The bracelet
Lastly, as mentioned before, this version of the Speedmaster 2021 watch features a deeply reshaped, brushed stainless steel bracelet with polished middle links. Its tapered shape enhances a comfortable fit against the wrist but also adds to its vintage style. The 5-link bracelet has an ovoid side profile and overall looks slimmer and lighter. It also comes equipped with a smaller, shorter and thinner clasp with a brushed surface and old-school OMEGA logo.
