WOTW: Panerai Radiomir Edizione Verde Militaire Watch

It’s not uncommon knowledge that Panerai are inextricably linked with the military forces. They supplied the Italian army with precision timekeeping tools for over half a century. Panerai’s military roots have been illustrated in the likes of many a model since this era, yet no watch is more apparent in presenting this side of the brand’s DNA than the Panerai Radiomir Edizione Verde Militare PAM00995 watch, which celebrates the company’s heritage in developing luxury military watches for the Italian Navy. In this Berry’s Watch Of The Week blog we’ll be covering the key attributes of this very special timepiece, along with some unique features relating to the manufacture of its movement.

So here’s something you may not already know about Panerai. When Guido Panerai (grandson of the founder) took over the family business in 1916, he created the self-luminous material called Radiomir. It allowed professional divers to read the time in dark conditions underwater. The first Radiomir models were created in 1936. Just four years later Panerai re-designed the reinforced lugs and enhanced the cushion-shaped profile of the case – style credentials that would become the inspiration for the 1940’s-style Panerai Radiomir PAM00995 today. A matt military green dial is the ultimate expression of field tested watches and although often the colour associated with land as opposed to water, this military Panerai watch certainly sets new standards in this field of watchmaking.

The Panerai Radiomir Edizione Verde Militare watch is dressed on an Italian tanned natural leather Ponte Vecchio strap which nods to a vintage-inspired feel. A spare fabric strap is also included in the purchase so you can enjoy changing-up your look depending on the occasion. A satin-finished green cherry wood presentation box adds to the character and charm of this beautiful timepiece – it will certainly go down well with any luxury military watch collector regardless of whether or not the individual has or has not yet been introduced to the company’s line of military collectables. The classic time-only watch boasts the instantly recognisable shape of the Panerai Radiomir case crafted from robust stainless steel. The sandwich construction of the dial enriches a set of gold plated hands adorned with the beige luminous material. Simple hour and minutes are presented along with a small seconds sub-dial located at 9 o’clock as seen in other Radiomir watch designs from the same collection. The 12, 6, and 9 o’clock locations around the hour track, communicate beautifully with the off-white contrast stitching running down the edges of the watch’s leather strap.

With an off-centre micro-rotor completely developed in-house at Panerai, the case of the Radiomir PAM00995 watch can be minimized to fit the reduced thickness of the movement, seen as the rotor of the P.4000 engine is smaller in diameter than the calibre itself. Preserving all the Panerai characteristics of accuracy, reliability and solidity but with a thickness of only 3.95 mm, the calibre P.4000 is a true innovative masterpiece built by the hands of the Panerai watchmaking team since its small oscillating weight is inserted within the movement rather than superimposed upon it. Another nice feature of the movement is its balance wheel which with variable inertia, its screws enable the rate to be adjusted precisely without altering the relationship of the balance spring and the bridge. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers an impressive 3 day power reserve. Panerai made two versions of the P.4000 movement – one with bridges with a horizontally brushed finish, blue engraving and an oscillating weight of tungsten alloy, with relief decoration on a matt surface (for steel models like the Panerai Radiomir Edizione Verde Militare PAM00995 watch), and another with circular brushed finishes on the bridges (for the gold case versions).

A see-through caseback crafted from anti reflective sapphire crystal glass completes the underside of this 100 meter water resistant Radiomir PAM00995 watch. The 45mm timepiece will look sophisticated enough to wear to work but also smart enough to pair with casual attire at the weekend. With its military-inspired aesthetics and reliable in-house built movement for ultimate accuracy, the Panerai Radiomir Edizione watch melds a classic look with vintage inspired elements to create a timepiece that embodies the company’s military roots as well as their position on a horological level within the luxury wristwatch industry.
