WOTW: The New TAG Heuer Professional 300 GMT Watch

A beautiful ocean-inspired blue dial framed by a fade-resistant ceramic bi-colour GMT scale on the bezel makes this new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT watch the perfect dive watch for travel

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch collection is home to some of the most unmistakable dive tools in the world. The watch’s sporty and versatile design offers functionality combined with qualities of robustness and durability. Within this line is a wide range of chronographs and three-handed automatic watches and in 2021, the Professional 300 watch received a well-deserved makeover. It not only won over the hearts of those with an affinity to the ocean but those also looking for a dry land tool for everyday wear. Now TAG Heuer has released a new Aquaracer Professional 300 with a GMT function – a companion for daring underwater exploration with the advantage of dual time functionality.

Every TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch has always been defined by its six key characteristics; luminous-coated hands and hour markers for enhanced readability in dark conditions, a screw-down crown to uphold sufficient water resistance, a strong sapphire crystal glass front for protecting the surface of the dial, superlative water resistance, a double-safety folding clasp built into its material strap or metal bracelet, and a unidirectional rotating bezel for intuitive timekeeping underwater. The only difference between the former Aquaracer watches and the new Professional 300 GMT watch is its bi-directional rotating bezel, built for ease of use when wanting to adjust the second time zone function. Compared to previous GMT models, the feature has seen a significant update, not to mention an entirely new colour scheme.

A luxury dive watch for travel

The dial of the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT watch is inspired by the deep blue colours of the ocean. Framing this display is a matching hue seen in half of the bezel to denote the hours between 6 o’clock in the evening and 6 o’clock in the morning. The other half of the bi-directional rotating bezel represents daylight hours in a brilliant white colour. To utilise the second time zone function, a striking yellow GMT hand cannot be missed against its accompanying Super-LumiNova-coated hour and minute hands and a second hand tipped in matching yellow. This yellow GMT hand makes a full rotation across the ocean-inspired blue dial once every 24 hours, following the 24-hour scale on the GMT bezel for easy tracking of a second time zone whilst on the move. The steel bezel of the new TAG Heuer Professional 300 GMT watch retains its identifiable dodecagonal-shaped bezel albeit with a knurled edging. What’s more, its deep blue and brilliant white ceramic insert is fade-resistant and scratch-proof.

The colour palette of the new TAG Heuer Professional 300 GMT watch in blue, white and yellow is a deliberate choice made by designers at the La Chaux-de-Fonds company. These colours represent the sea, the sky, the sun and the crashing waves against the shore. As seen in previous Aquaracer watches and GMT models, this new wristwatch features the instantly-recognisable horizontal lined pattern across the surface of its dial, as well as a date window under a cyclops lens at the 6 o’clock location. The mix of trapezoid and octagonal-shaped hour markers adds further interest to the design, as does the TAG Heuer shield logo and the “Aquaracer” lettering at the top of the display. The surface of the dial is protected by a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with anti-reflective technology to ensure a clear view of the dial at any point during the day or night.

The confident profile of the Aquaracer Professional 300 watch is continued through into this new design with a 43mm stainless steel case, executed in fine-brushed and polished finishes. The sides of the case are chamfered, whilst the lugs remain short and angular to enhance a masculine and aggressive look. The case also features a screw-down crown with crown guards that add extra protection to this feature whilst exploring under or above the water’s surface.

Reassuring for those who frequently take to the seas is the watch’s guaranteed water resistance of 300 meters. This provides ample protection over the Calibre 7, which sits inside the case. The self-winding movement is based on the architecture of the Sellita SW330. Used previously in the other Professional 300 GMT watches, the movement offers an impressive power reserve of 50 hours and beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The Calibre 7 is concealed behind a solid stainless steel caseback that has been engraved with the familiar “scaphander” diving helmet against a beautiful hexagonal motif.

The model that is fitted on a deep blue rubber strap to match its dial is priced at £2,900 and comes equipped with a new stainless steel micro-adjusting clasp. This enables the band to be readjusted easily to suit wearer-comfort. The stainless steel bracelet option is priced at £3,150 and features a fine-brushed three-link design equipped with the same clasp, engraved with the TAG Heuer logo.
