Grand Seiko watches epitomize Japanese luxury. With an expansive range of classic and highly accurate timepieces from the manufacturer’s popular Heritage, Evolution 9, Sport and Elegance collections, there is a Grand Seiko watch for every kind of collector. Seiko has been producing mechanical calibres for its Grand Seiko collection since the 1960s. Known for their precision and for incorporating advanced technologies into their designs, Grand Seiko movements are some of the most reliable in the world. To match the reputation of its calibres, Grand Seiko watches are crafted from superior materials that surpass some of the industry’s leading Swiss watch manufacturers.

Despite an exemplary collection of precise and reliable high-performance movements, Seiko’s manufacture of mechanical calibres has been interrupted over the years. One obstacle was the quartz crisis that Seiko itself drove. After this break, mechanical movement manufacture resumed in 1991 and since then, every Grand Seiko movement has been completely hand assembled and examined in depth to meet the criteria of the official Grand Seiko Test.  From lever to hairspring, all Grand Seiko movements are developed in-house by Seiko specialists. This dedication has led to the company’s innovative Spring Drive Calibre. Its hybrid technology combines the benefits of both quartz and mechanical components. Equipped with a 72-hour power reserve, the movement operates in the same way as a mechanical movement, producing a sweeping seconds hand but providing the accuracy of a quartz movement.

One of the most popular Grand Seiko watches to come in the last decade is the Grand Seiko Snowflake. Both the steel 41mm Grand Seiko Elegance “Snowflake Blue” watch ref, SBGA407G and the 41mm titanium Grand Seiko Heritage Snowflake watch ref. SBGA211 feature dials reminiscent of freshly fallen snow and are powered by the Spring Drive calibre 9R65. Grand Seiko is also renowned for producing limited edition models like the Grand Seiko Sport GMT watch ref. SBGN023G that are highly sought after among aficionados.

Recently, Grand Seiko has been celebrating its 40th anniversary and soon after released the eagerly anticipated Grand Seiko Evolution 9 watch in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Spring Drive Chronograph, along with a stunning “Cosmo Blue” version. Perhaps one feature that makes the Grand Seiko watch collection such a popular one to explore is the fact that those Grand Seiko watches with chronometer quality were only released to consumers outside of the Asian market after 2010 and are only produced in small quantities each year.
