Manual watches have been around since as early as the 1500’s and are still a popular choice when it comes to mechanical watches. Our collection of manual IWC watches here at Berry’s, is second to none and caters for a wide range of tastes and styles. As official UK stockists of these timepieces, we are most proud of these exquisite masterpieces, each developed in house on the banks of the Rhine in Switzerland. Each design created by the Maison sets new standards in complexity – symbols of the manufacturer’s unprecedented craftsmanship. All of our manual watches created by IWC Schaffhausen are fitted with an impressive eight day power reserve. Not only great for a luxury vacation, but also useful for those extra work hours at night, it is clear that IWC’s commitment to quality and their standards in precision remain at the very forefront of each design.
Manual IWC watches work by tightening the mainspring as the user turns the crown, resulting in stored energy. As this mainspring unwinds energy is released and transferred to the escapement by the gear train. Portions of energy are controlled effectively by this escapement and used by the balance wheel to steadily beat back and forth. After so many of these beats, the dial train begins to use the energy to advance the hands of the watch.
The IWC Portofino Handwound Eight Days watch, decorated in gorgeous anthracite and red gold tones, is a wonderful choice for the classic gentleman. Those with an appreciation for simple understated wristwatches will welcome this design upon the wrist. It communicates style, charm and elegance, thanks to delicately crafted red gold decoration against a rich slate-coloured backdrop. The 59210-calibre movement runs smoothly and precisely at the very heart of a beautiful 18ct red gold case, whilst an authentic dark brown alligator strap by Santoni creates comfort against the skin. An eight day power reserve scale has been placed at the 9 o’clock location on the dial, allowing the gentleman the opportunity to reference the watch’s current power levels with ease.
For something a little more striking, the same design is available in a deep blue dial with a polished stainless steel bezel. The twelfth hour is identified by a crisp rhodium plated Roman numeral, whilst a date display adds a functional edge to the design. Dressed against a white background, this feature enhances legibility for the wearer when referencing the date at a quick glance. In accordance with traditional watch manufacture, methods that IWC regard as paramount - the Breguet spring is bent into the perfect shape to improve accuracy. The Portofino collection was created by IWC Schaffhausen to illustrate the beauty of the Mediterranean and the relaxed lifestyle that goes hand-in-hand with it. Establishing itself as one of the most successful designs over the last three decades, the Portofino watch now holds some of the world’s most desirable manual IWC watches of their entire history with the collection.
