Parisian fashion house, Chanel continue to push the boundaries of innovation with a line of watches inspired by the handbag of the desirable Chanel 2.55 purse. Among many design characteristics that define this collection, the 70’s styled stainless steel bracelet and the bisected dial, separated by a rotating metal bar, are by far two of the most noticeable. The Chanel Code Coco watch flexes the Maison's horological muscles that little bit extra. Despite bringing out their first in-house developed calibre not long before this collection, the watch demonstrates how the company are not afraid to continue producing luxury designer watches, no matter how far they develop as a manufacturer of the more technical wristwatch. The design conveys a fresh idea yet still remains true to Chanel's codes – allowing the timepieces to make a statement without even trying hard.
The case of the Chanel Code Coco watch is designed to resemble the clasp of the 2.55 handbag created by Mademoiselle Chanel in 1955, thus the name of the bag bears reference to the year of “55” in its title. The bag is quilted in order to give it more shape and volume, and Chanel have chosen to replicate this look on the stainless steel bracelet. The watch fastens on top of the wrist as opposed to underneath it. The clasp which runs across the dial separates the bottom half from the top and can be twisted to release the watch from the wrist. Like the iconic Chanel Premier watch, the dial goes without an hour track. Two hands and the “Chanel” lettering are the only detailing needed to convey the time on this wristwatch. The stainless steel clasp runs down the middle of the black lacquered rectangular dial, dividing the single set diamond on the southern half from the time-reading half at the top.
At the heart of the timepiece lies a super accurate quartz movement. It provides the lady with round-the-clock precision without fear of the movement ever losing time. All individual parts of the watch are assembled inside Chanel’s workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and the company used only their finest in materials to create these masterpieces. Just like those designs seen in the BOY.FRIEND and the Premier watch collection, the corners of the CODE.COCO watch case have been clipped to soften the look of the inner dial. Some designs from the collection are embellished with a glistening hour track, whilst others remain simple and understated with a two handed dial.
