OMEGA has recently unveiled a new Speedmaster ‘57 watch in a slew of eye-catching colours. The models are powered by a new hand-wound movement and boast a revamped design with a new, slimmer case. Certainly not short on style or colour options – these four new variants to the Speedmaster ‘57 watch series offer a choice between a stainless steel bracelet or leather straps and continue with their vintage-inspired take on the much-loved Moonwatch.
The OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 is a sub-series that sits under the Speedmaster family – home to one of the world’s most famous and instantly recognisable chronographs of all time. Having marked a huge milestone in history (and OMEGA’s heritage) as the first wristwatch to venture to the moon (on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin), the Speedy has since gained a global following, spanning from the classic Moonwatch to more high-end models and, of course, the Speedmaster ‘57. The OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 is known as the retro Speedmaster and was originally launched back in 2013. Inspired by the original Speedmaster watch ref. CK2915 of 1957, the most distinctive feature of this vintage-infused chronograph became its bi-compax chronograph dial layout and surrounding tachymeter bezel. If you consider yourself a serious fan of the OMEGA Speedmaster, you’ll already be familiar with the features of the Speedmaster ‘57, including its 1950’s-inspired design and its three-piece link stainless steel bracelet as seen in the 2017 release of the limited edition Speedmaster 60th anniversary watch, belonging to the Speedmaster ‘57 range. It featured polished outer links and brushed central links that attach to straight lugs as opposed to curved ones.
The new OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 watches
One of the stand-out features of the new Speedmaster ‘57 watches would have to be its new manually-wound chronograph movement, certified to METAS standards and with Master Chronometer certification. The movement is fitted with a column wheel for better overall mechanical performance and offers a 60-hour power reserve. It also features twin mainspring barrels. The Calibre 9906 is a 14 ligne movement that measures a diameter of 31.5mm, with a thickness of 6.4mm. These dimensions make it thinner than the 6.7mm-thick Calibre 3861. The new OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 watches, therefore, have the thinnest case among all manually-powered OMEGA watches. Closely resembling the Ref. CK 2915, the watches also boast non-faceted, straight lugs, a symmetrical case band and no crown guards.
Some of the upgrades to the new OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 watch also include some distinct dial features, such as the Broad Arrow handset and the burgundy, deep green and blue dial variants, meaning that you can now go all-out with an eye-catching shade, whilst the classic black variant is still on offer for those that desire a pared-down timepiece. The black dial option of the new OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 watch also features sunken hour markers, along with vintage-inspired Super-LumiNova that nods to the original 1957 Speedmaster model. The entrancing burgundy dial and rich green dial options, as well as the stunning blue dial version, all feature white Super-LumiNova material on their hands and hour markers, whilst all models share the Broad Arrow hour hand.
The new OMEGA Speedmaster ‘57 watches all measure a case diameter of 40.5mm and a thickness of 12.99mm. Integrated with 50-meter water resistance and equipped with a strong sapphire crystal glass front with anti-reflective treatment that enables a clear and easy view into the dial of the Speedmaster watch at any time – these new models certainly lack nothing in terms of the usual robustness and expected functionality of the collectable Speedy.
Sitting proudly within a minimal bezel, the manually-winding OMEGA Calibre 9906 is put on show through a sapphire-backed case, including its “arabesque” Geneva waves that majestically fan out from the blackened balance wheel. Blackened screws, rhodium-plated bridges and blackened barrels are also put on display.
Other features of the Speedmaster ‘57 watch are still present in the new burgundy, green, blue and black models. These include the tachymeter bezel and legible bi-compax chronograph dial layout featuring a 12-hour sub=scale at 3 o’clock, balanced by a small second sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The date is nestled in between the two registers at 6 o’clock. All four models are available on a stainless steel bracelet option. The black dial version is also offered on a brown leather band, whilst the blue dial version comes on a matching blue leather band. The green and burgundy dial versions are also offered on a matching green and burgundy coloured leather strap respectively.
