TAG Heuer injects colour back into the Formula 1 watch collection with an asphalt grey and lime chronograph model and a zesty orange three-hander.
Just before Watches & Wonders launched earlier this year, TAG Heuer had already begun teasing its huge global following with a few early releases, namely those from the beloved Formula 1 watch collection. In total, four new models were released but today we’re looking at two in particular; the Formula 1 Chronograph with a grey and lime green dial ref: CAZ101AG and the three-handed date model in a vivid orange colour ref: WAZ101A
A bit about the TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch collection
The connection TAG Heuer has forged with the Formula 1 industry is as solid as they come. The Swiss watchmaker, which was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer, is renowned today for its quality, heritage, precision and innovation. The brand thinks outside the box and in doing so has been able to manufacture the vivid and sporty timepieces that collectors have come to know and love as a TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch.
The famous watchmaker is the Official Watch, Official Timekeeper and Team Performance Partner of Formula One’s team Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. Both entities share many values and the TAG Heuer name can be seen on the gloves, uniforms, suits, helmets and the racing cars of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team itself. Anchoring these ties with Formula 1 is TAG Heuer’s relationship with the motorsport industry that stems back to 1911 when the Swiss watchmaker developed the first automobile dashboard clock. Thanks to this, TAG has always shown its deep understanding of the demanding requirements of the motorsport world and the importance of precision on the racetrack.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch collection embodies the ‘Don’t Crack Under Pressure’ tagline that the brand launched for these high-speed instruments. Their robust cases and vivid dials are perfect for the racetrack but also appeal to sport watch enthusiasts and those that love the youthful and dynamic appeal of these rugged wristwatches. Champion drivers all over the world have turned to the reliability and performance of a TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch, and the range is also home to the special edition Red Bull and Calibre 5 models. Some of the key features of the Formula 1 watch include luminous hands and hour markers for assistance with timekeeping in the dark, an easy-grip screw-in crown, and vivid dials framed by bezels adorned with 60-minute scales or tachymeter scales.
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 CAZ101AG
With the new Formula 1 watch ref: CAZ101AG, TAG Heuer has borrowed the same asphalt grey dial seen in the Porsche Edition Carrera watch and dropped some splashes of lime green colour onto it. These striking accents give the chronograph sports watch the dynamic and youthful appeal we have all come to instantly associate with this famous motorsport-inspired collection. The innovative colour can be seen in the baton hour markers and the single Arabic numeral sitting at 12 o’clock, as well as the central hour, minute and chronograph second hands. Just last year, TAG Heuer released the 2020 Ayrton Senna Formula 1 and its design is reminiscent of this one. There’s also a black chapter ring around the periphery of the dial that matches perfectly with a trio of chronograph counters, filled with a sleek black hue. The chronograph counters offer a small second feature at 2 o’clock, a 1/10th of a second function at 6 o’clock, and a 30-minute totaliser at 10 o’clock.
A black and lime green tachymeter scale makes up the bezel on top of this sturdy 43mm stainless steel case, fitted with black PVD-coated push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock. The tachymeter also surrounds a legible date window on the dial at 4 o’clock, set against a white background to optimise legibility. Flipping the case of this new TAG Heuer Formula 1 CAZ101AG watch over will reveal the familiar chequered flag-inspired engraving that takes up around half of the surface of the caseback. Behind the back of this 200-meter water-resistant case is a Swiss-made quartz movement for uncompromised accuracy. The new Formula 1 watch is fitted on a stainless steel bracelet with a mix of polished and fine-brushed links that enclose the wrist with a TAG logo-engraved folding clasp and push-buttons.
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 WAZ101A
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch with a vivid orange dial that goes by the ref: WAZ101A was made for high speed too. Its robust stainless steel case, again measuring a 43mm diameter, has been integrated with 200-meter water resistance. Like the asphalt grey and lime green iteration, this model is topped with a strong lens crafted from scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. To assist with a glare-free view into the dial, the strong glass material that is second-hardest to a diamond, is also treated with a layer of anti-reflective technology. Underneath this glass pane is the key design feature of the entire watch – the zesty orange dial. You can’t miss the colour of the display if you tried. Coupled with the Swiss brand’s TAG Heuer shield located at 12 o’clock, you can pick out the design of the new Formula 1 watch from across the room.
The model features oversized Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock, as do the rest of the three-handed date models from the range. A reliable quartz powered movement propels a set of Super-LumiNova-coated minute, hour and second hands around the dial. In addition to this, the baton hour markers around the hour track are equally as easy to reference, as is the white date window located at 3 o’clock. To finish its sporty look, the new TAG Heuer Formula WAZ101A watch wraps around the wrist with a brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp and a push-piece mechanism.
