Meet the next generation of the all-purpose sporty-elegant Breitling Chronomat…
The Chronomat’s Aviation-Inspired Roots
It might surprise you to know that the Chronomat watch actually stems right back to the 1940s, serving as an inspiration to the Breitling Navitimer and originally equipped with a slide rule bezel for assisting with all sorts of complicated air-bound tasks. It was not until 1984 however, when Breitling decided to break the mould and relaunch the Chronomat, that this tool watch gained its distinct set of characteristics that we have all come to know and love today. Its eye-catching design was based on a model released just a year earlier by Breitling – the Frecce Tricolori watch, which the manufacturer created for the hotshots of the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic fleet. In addition to a set of rider tabs located on the bezel to assist with an easy-grip, the Chronomat also featured legible hands and indexes, an onion-shaped crown and a distinct Rouleaux bracelet released exclusively for the series.
Breitling CEO Georges Kern explains a little about how the new Super Chronomat is comfortable enough for every kind of pursuit whilst never straying too far away from its distinguishable design codes:
This is a watch you’ll get noticed in without having to worry about it,” – “This watch is tough enough for every pursuit, but it won’t get in the way of your sense of style.— Breitling CEO Georges Kern
The Breitling Super Chronomat B01 44
The new Breitling Super Chronomat range includes the B01 44 models in a choice of blue or black dials – each sharing silver-filled chronograph counters located in the familiar 3-6-9 layout. These counters provide 30-minute, 12-hour and small second functions respectively. A date aperture is nestled inside the 6 o’clock sub-counter and a sporty shot of red is seen in the central chronograph hand – a design trait seen throughout the original Chronomat series. In addition to this, these 44mm stainless steel chronographs are also 200-meter water-resistant, and to assist with underwater exploration, have been equipped with a unidirectional ratcheted rotating bezel. Interestingly, this is the first time that Breitling has chosen to use a ceramic insert in the bezel of the Chronomat watch – its shade matching its respective dial colour.
The bezel can be aligned with the minute hand on the dial for successful measuring of elapsed time underwater, guided of course, by Super-LumiNova plots and hands on the dial itself. The new Breitling Super Chronomat watches are powered by the brand’s independently manufactured Calibre 01, which comes with a 5-year guarantee. The movement provides a 70-hour power reserve and performs through the lens of a sapphire crystal glass exhibition caseback feature at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. To help uphold the watch’s 200-meter water resistance, the case is also equipped with a screw-down caseback and screw-down crown with two gaskets.
Both the blue and black dial versions of the new Chronomat watches are offered on the instantly recognisable stainless steel Rouleaux bracelet with a refined butterfly clasp, or a Rouleaux-inspired rubber strap with a folding clasp in a colour matching their respective dial. As mentioned, these rubber straps are the result of Breitling’s cutting-edge injection moulding techniques. Woven and matte finishes worked into the surface of the band give this type of strap a remarkable sense of depth and a quality that is matched by the rest of the watch’s design.
Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar
The Four-Year Calendar complication in the new Super Chronomat watch range needs adjusting only once every four years to accommodate for the leap year. Its semi-perpetual mechanism ticks over perfectly for 1461 days offering all the functions necessary on its luxurious blue dial for keeping organised in the office or at home. Powered by the Calibre 19, the Chronomat 44 watch features a sub-counter at 12 o’clock combining the date with a small second function. At 3 o’clock is a moon phase indicator enveloping the famous Breitling lettering and logo in luxurious 18ct red gold accents. The 6 o’clock counter features the days of the week combined with a 12-hour totaliser, while the 9 o’clock sub-dial incorporates the months of the year with a 30-minute chronograph function. In addition to this, the hour batons and hands are filled with Super-LumiNova and framed with a blue ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel. A screw-down crown with two gaskets and a tightly sealed anti-glare cambered sapphire crystal glass helps to maintain a 100-meter water-resistant environment for the Calibre 19 to perform in.
The Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch is a luxurious stainless steel and 18ct red gold bi-colour model with a blue-coated crown and red gold push-pieces to match the elegant red gold accents on the dial. As with the B01 44 models, this Four-Year Calendar watch is offered on a Rouleaux bracelet crafted from stainless steel and 18ct red gold, securing with a butterfly clasp, or a blue or black Rouleau-inspired rubber strap option with a folding clasp.
