The legendary Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch served a true practical purpose during the 1930s, especially for British polo players who wanted to keep track of accurate time whilst playing the sport in post-war India. When the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverse watch first launched in response to this request, the dial side of the case could be turned in on itself, protecting the glass and withstanding damage sustained during the sport like scratching, bumps and nicks. The stainless steel caseback was turned to face upwards and the watch secured comfortably to the sportsmen’s wrist with a traditional leather strap. Fast forward to 2021 and the new Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds watch is proof that Jaeger-LeCoultre never rests on its laurels. The iconic reversing case is still present, paying homage to the original 1930s Reverso watch – this time, in a striking deep green aesthetic.
The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds watch is, in many ways, an update of the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1931 watch that Jaeger-LeCoultre released to mark the opening of its Bond Street Boutique in London not so long ago, sharing its intense sporty British green colour scheme. Instead of the special Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower engraving upon the caseback of the limited-to-26-pieces Reverso watch – the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Tribute Monoface Small Seconds watch instead features a solid stainless steel caseback. Its dial is also executed in a sunray finish which plays on light depending on the angle its surface is admired from.
The new 2021 Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, released for Watches & Wonders this year, features the familiar small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The colourful dial is not just for viewing pleasure either. Jaeger Le-Coultre was the first manufacture to begin experimenting with colourful dials with its Reverso watch. First came the silver-white shade, then the dark grey and red, followed by a navy blue coloured dial in 1933 and, of course, an indulgent chocolatey brown coloured display two years later. This intense green hue is an extension of the brand’s innovative taste for vividness and attention to detail.
The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Small Seconds watch is a refined gentleman’s companion. Its dimensions measuring 45.6×27.4mm case are combined with a case height of 8.5mm. Its rectangular case shape, forged from robust stainless steel, features a spacious polished caseback, leaving plenty of opportunity for a specially engraved message or company logo upon its surface. Cleverly, for the right-handed wearer, once the case is flipped over it leaves the stainless steel caseback on show with a unique engraving (if desired) and the crown still pointing towards the fingers.
The lacquered, sunray finished green dial of the new Jaeger Le-Coultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds watch is the perfect backdrop for sword-shaped hands and a legible hour track represented in baton markers. The outskirts of the dial feature a railroad minute track that is both easy to read and in proportion to the rest of the features on the dial. A protecting lens crafted from scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass has been treated with layers of anti-reflective technology, granting a clear view into the dial without any undesirable glare from the sun or artificial lighting. It also shields the indulgent green dial from dust, scratching, heat, light and moisture damage.
The new Jaeger Le-Coultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds watch also features the distinct gadroons on the polished bezel. The small seconds sub-dial is carefully balanced by the famous Jaeger-LeCoultre lettering at 12 o’clock, whilst Inside the watch’s 30-meter water-resistant steel case is the manual-winding Calibre 822/2. The in-house manufactured movement offers hours, minutes and small seconds and boasts a performance of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement also provides a useful 45-hour power reserve, making it an ideal option for taking away on business and alternating with another favourite from the Jaeger-LeCoultre catalogue. The Calibre 822/2 has served the Reverso watch collection well, including the range’s Ultra Thin Reverso models.
To complete the classic yet eye-catching look of the new men’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch, a deep green alligator leather strap has been chosen to match the captivating shade of the dial. The leather strap secures to the wrist with a steel buckle engraved with the JLC logo.
