Avant-garde sports watch manufacturer, TAG Heuer has joined the customization club, not only with its Monaco watch released earlier in 2019 but now with a special edition of its Aquaracer watch. The innovation is a collaborative effort with leading watch customizer, Bamford Watch Department and comes clad in a striking steel, black and orange aesthetic.
Collaborations between luxury watch manufacturers and customization companies are becoming a growing thing. With a more prominent focus on design as opposed to horological sophistication, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Bamford Limited Edition is a nod to the 1970s dive watch and imparts a bold retro presence on the wrist.
Bamford Watch Company focuses on enhancing the strengths of any one watch it transforms, as opposed to disrupting its style or taking away from its key aesthetics. This approach to customization has led to a successful relationship between the famous Swiss watchmaker and the British company. Bamford Watch Department has been providing a full customisation service on luxury watches since 2004 and gained recognition on a global scale after collaborating with some of the most prestigious manufacturers within the luxury watch industry. In comparison, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch has been a popular collectable for some years now but it was the models from the manufacturer’s history that piqued the interest of Bamford Watch Company. Delving into the brand’s archives and selecting predecessors of the Aquaracer (various watches developed between the years 1979 and 1994), the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Bamford Limited Edition watch borrows the instrumental look that paved the way to the first Aquaracer watch in 2004.
With an angular case and a confident 43mm size, this special edition TAG Heuer Bamford Watch is crafted from grade 2 titanium for a corrosion-resistant and lightweight feel on the wrist. Its dodecagonal shaped unidirectional bezel is equipped with a useful 60-minute diving scale for intuitive reading of elapsed time underwater. Ensuring it only rotates one way, the bezel can only ever reduce remaining dive time as opposed to extending it, thus ensuring the diver never outstays his welcome underwater.
A sandblasted grade 2 titanium bracelet secures to the wrist, enabling the wearer to enjoy the timepiece anywhere and everywhere, from partaking in a spot of light water sports to sealing a deal in a business meeting, attending a conference in the boardroom or wearing it with something more relaxed at the weekend. A folding clasp and diver extension facilitate fitted to the bracelet enables for the watch to be worn over the top of diving gear, whilst its lightweight feel enhances a collector’s overall experience of wearing this sporty diving watch on the wrist.
Bamford Watch Department’s signature colour is black. This colour forms the base of the dial while several textural finishes add depth and character to the watch’s design. A concentric pattern that almost takes the form of a vinyl record or military radar effect is a particularly attractive feature of the timepiece. Orange blocks of colour feature around the inner flange of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Bamford Limited Edition watch – a first for the collection. Another new feature to debut in the Aquaracer range is the design of the sword-shaped hands trimmed in orange. This vivid orange hue mirrors a 1970s retro style that works well with the other short, sharp blasts of colour seen in the design. Stick markers represent the hour track, coated in Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark.
Untouched of course is the self-winding Calibre 5, which sits inside the 300-meter water-resistant titanium case of this special Aquaracer watch. This engine, based on the tried and tested Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement, provides a 38-hour power reserve and takes care of hours, minutes and seconds, as well as a date feature which can be seen at 3 o’clock under a magnifying lens. Faithful to the robust and solid construction of the Aquaracer case, the model features a sealed caseback, screw-down crown and an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front for a clear view of the dial.
