WOTW: Hamilton 46mm BeLOWZERO TENET Limited Edition Watch

Swiss watchmaker, Hamilton reinforces its inextricable links to Hollywood and the film industry with another timepiece to add to its already impressive list of 500 plus watches that have appeared on the silver screen (including Elvis Presley’s Ventura in Blue Hawaii, and models like the iconic Jazzmaster). Some films have even showcased the standard catalogue version from which this new Hamilton Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO watch takes design cues from.

It’s not the first time movie maker, Christopher Nolan has tasked Hamilton with making a wristwatch to coincide with yet another of his films. Back in 2014 the Hamilton “Murph” watch – a cult wristwatch – was launched to mark the release of Nolan’s gripping “Intersteller” – a Sci-Fi film whose plot centers primarily around watches in the search for an alternative, habitable earth in space. Now, Hamilton are remodeling an already popular Hamilton Khaki watch in a special edition form for Nolan’s new film, TENET.

The watch is offered in two variants; blue, which you can check out here, or red, which we’re soon to be receiving stock of, so watch this space for more details…

The two watches are separated by one difference only, but it’s a vivid one. The arrow tipped seconds hand is either finished in blue (H78505331) or red (H78505332) depending on personal preference, and the timepieces being a special edition is limited to just 888 worldwide. Each watch will also come with special packaging to coordinate with the colour of said coloured hand, having been designed by TENET’s production manager, Nathan Cowley. The blue and red colours seen in each respective watch pay reference significantly to the film itself played by Robert Pattinson and David Washington.

Dozens of the timepieces were used during the making of TENET and It’s believed that the watch starring on screen actually features a custom digital screen, however, the BeLOWZERO limited edition watches have the more conventional Arabic analogue dial. Despite us having to wait five years for the release of Intersteller’s original Hamilton “Murph” watch, the BeLOWZERO watch was made available before the release of TENET, sparking mystery surrounding how it will be featured throughout the film itself.

The model took a total of 18 months to develop from the initial pencil sketches to a reliable timepiece equipped to serve the wrist with an impeccable movement at its heart. Some small changes have been made to the Hamilton Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO watch compared to the standard catalogue model. The date has been removed creating an overall more balanced look. Its bold and masculine cushion-shaped case adds some angular dimension to the rugged all-black design, with a broad 46mm diameter and a lightweight case construction made from titanium. The surface of the case has been finished with a black PVD coating to give the watch a stealthy look, and is completed on a black rubber strap with the Hamilton woodmark between the lugs.

The black-on-black design code to this Hamilton Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO watch enhances it capability for underwater use. The 1000-meter water-resistant watch with a diving bezel that is easy to operate makes the timepiece ideal for more than just a leisurely swim. Chunky arrow tips on the hands and minutes have been coated with grey luminescent technology to assist an already legible dial.

It’s clear to see that not much has changed design-wise between the original Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO watch and this limited-edition model. It can thus be interpreted by collectors that the original model was just as preferred by Hamilton and Nathan Cowley himself as it was by Khaki collectors, warranting very little change needed to reinvent this wristwatch into something suitable for the purpose of TENET. The three-handed model is powered by one of Hamilton’s trusty H10 movements, equipped, as its namesake suggests, with a useful 80-hour power reserve. The snail and pearled decorative patterns adorned to the surface of the movement contrast beautifully and have been finished to Hamilton’s normal high standard.

As mentioned earlier, the blue Hamilton Khaki BeLOWZERO watch priced at £1,890 is now available to view and purchase here. Details for the Red iteration are soon to follow.
