WOTW: TAG Heuer Carrera “160th Year Anniversary” Montreal Dial Limited Edition Watch

Celebrating the brand’s 160th anniversary meant only one thing for TAG Heuer this year – another unique iteration of the popular Carrera. The TAG Heuer Carrera “160th Year Anniversary” Montreal Dial Limited Edition watch is a stylish automatic with a vintage-inspired display. It’s a take on one of TAG’s earliest Carrera watches from the 60s and 70s, with legible chronograph counters that exude a retro sporty appeal…

Stealing design codes from the original TAG Heuer Montreal…

If there’s one resembling feature that can be appreciated throughout the entire Carrera Montreal range from the earliest models right through to the most recent, it’s a play on bold colour codes and a striking minimalist design – characteristics that Jack Carrera undoubtedly favoured the most. A radial-brushed cushion-shaped steel case can be seen in the “160th Year Anniversary” TAG Heuer Carrera Montreal model. Original Montreal watches from the 60s and 70s were somewhat more attention-demanding than other Carrera models, with bulkier, confident colour contrasts and a crown positioned at 9 o’clock on the case. But taking particular inspiration from the TAG Heuer reference: 110503W, this special edition TAG Heuer Montreal watch boasts a vivid colour pallet of blues, whites, reds and yellows. With luminous treatment applied to the appliques on the dial, the watch can be easily referenced during both day and night.

A compact, clean Carrera

Considering this model takes inspiration from earlier ancestors from the Montreal line, the 39mm TAG Heuer Carrera “160th Year Anniversary” Montreal Dial Limited Edition watch is a compact design for modern-day watch wearers. Drawing from the minimalist aesthetics of Montreal watches from the ’70s but with an unavoidable sportiness, the watch features a domed sapphire crystal glass lens paired with faceted lugs and straight flanks. These lugs lend to the illusion of an overall larger case size, enhanced of course, by the clean, crisp polished push-pieces located at 2 and 4 o’clock on the watch’s 100-meter water-resistant case.

Considering it wears a little larger on the wrist, you could easily pair this TAG Heuer Carrera watch with gym wear, relaxed attire and sportswear thanks to a blue alligator leather strap with a polished steel folding clasp engraved with the iconic Heuer lettering.

Less is more…

What makes the TAG Heuer Carrera “160th Year Anniversary” Montreal Dial Limited Edition watch so unusual is its almost bare dial. With minimal decoration or lettering beside the unmistakable “TAG Heuer” lettering underneath the 12 o’clock marker, this makes for an eye-catching timepiece, to say the least. A matt white opaline dial is bordered by a deep blue track around the periphery of the display, while the blue counters offering chronograph minutes, seconds and hours are rendered in a blue azurage finish. Similar to the TAG Heuer Montreal from 1972, a pop of yellow colour adds a touch of depth to the dial, as does the red-coated chronograph seconds hand.

The Calibre Heuer 02 movement

Worth mentioning is the cutting edge technology that lies within the case of this special edition Carrera Montreal watch. Integrated with a column wheel design and vertical clutch mechanism (for improved chronograph timekeeping), the Calibre Heuer 02 can carry out its work peerlessly through a sapphire crystal glass lens. A redesigned oscillating weight is decorated with a lacquer-filled engraving which sets this movement apart as an anniversary edition. The engine provides an 80-hour power reserve, giving you plenty of flexibility before the watch’s power is spent and requires winding again.

If you’re looking for a sporty, retro-inspired blast from the past, the TAG Heuer “160th Year Anniversary” Montreal watch isn’t quite a re-edition but more a take on a popular model from a bygone era. Whilst it boasts the boldness and daring colour pallet of a 1972 model, what powers the watch from the inside is nothing short of cutting edge, 21st century Swiss Haute Horlogerie. The watch promises a reliable in-house developed calibre for a very accessible price tag.
