WotW: Tudor Black Bay S&G Chronograph Watch

If you like 1950’s diver’s watches you’ll no doubt have already set your sights on the Tudor Black Bay S & G chronograph M79363N-0001 model, which combines a sporty aesthetic with plenty of masculinity. Two tone fans will rejoice at the thought of a Tudor watch that provides chronograph functions inside a bold, attention-grabbing design that oozes sophistication from every angle.

The Black Bay models belong to Tudor’s popular Heritage collection and are inspired by the retro diver’s watches that belong to the original Tudor Submariner watch collection. The timepieces which have been on the market since 2012, are recognisable for a number of aesthetical characteristics – the snowflake-shaped central hands for examples, with a distinct squared-off tip, the large crown (which foregoes a crown protector) and a domed crystal glass lens. Newer models from the line all feature these attributes, plus in-house mechanical movements which experts at Tudor have been kitting out their Black Bay watches with since 2016.

The brother brand of Rolex impresses once again with this bold Black Bay watch – this time with a bi-colour case design crafted from robust stainless steel and luxurious 18ct yellow gold. The Tudor Black Bay S & G Chronograph is a compatible design for all sized wrists, thanks to its versatile 41mm case diameter. A mix of black and gold seen in the dial of the watch is a feast for the eyes. The “S” and the “G” references in its title stand for the steel and gold materials used in its innovative case construction.

The dial;

When light shines in through the domed lens of this Tudor Black Bay S & G Chronograph, it hits the iconic snowflake hands that have become a recognisable look within the Black Bay watch collection. Light pounds onto the dial in such a way that it illuminates those sumptuous golden accents. And speaking of dial features rendered in yellow golden tones – there’s a whole bunch of them – indulgence and a refined, luxurious feel is definitely what master craftsmen at Tudor have focused on in the manufacture if this retro chronograph. The two textured golden chronograph sub counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, join forces with a chapter ring scale, applied indexes and some dial text – all layered in a yellow gold colour. Breaking up the unique black, gold and silver pallet are two shots of red colour – one in the tip of the seconds hand, the other in the “200 meter water resistant” text seen at the south-end of the dial.

Diving attributes:

Features that make the Tudor Black Bay S & G Chronograph watch a bona fide diver’s tool are those such as the matte black anodized aluminum bezel and a sapphire glass lens that protects the luminous coated appliques on the dial with its scratch resistant and anti reflective properties.  The pushers in gold which are located at 2 and 4 o’clock on the case, enable effortless facilitation over the chronograph features, and a date aperture at 6 o’clock has been added.

The movement:

Tudor’s in-house MT5813 automatic chronograph movement offers incredible value for money. It’s a traditional mechanical chronograph equipped with a vertical clutch and column wheel. It powers a 45 minute counter at 3 and a running seconds counter at 9 o’clock as well as offering an impressive 70 hour power reserve.

The bracelet:

The bracelet design of this Tudor Black Bay S and G watch are reminiscent of a Rolex bracelet. The centre links are completed in solid gold and feature a brushed effect. The design of course will enable you to wear the watch as a sporty timepiece throughout the day, yet its gold accents are sure to elevate formal or smart attire by night should you wish to do so.
