IWC Schaffhausen Top Gun Pilot’s Watch Collection

It’s a fact that naval aviation requires incredible skill. That’s why the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program in the U.S. Navy provides the best Navy pilots with tactical training to assist them with spending months at a time in an aircraft carrier, performing challenging manoeuvres and tight curves for example, which require maximum acceleration forces. But here’s where IWC Schaffhausen have played a pivotal role in the aviation industry, having created a tool to assist Navy personnel further, with an instrument that is made of robust and long-lasting materials for facing the most extreme of latitudinal challenges. The Top Gun line in IWC’s Pilot’s watch collection is a series of luxury wristwatches for men made from materials like titanium and ceramic and tested under a series of challenging conditions to ensure they are fit for work as a Navy pilot’s companion.

Top Gun watches from IWC Schaffhausen meet the specific requirements of elite jet pilots thanks to a blend of time-honoured manufacturing methods and cutting-edge technology, that has advanced the world-renowned status and the reputation of the Maison within the Swiss watch industry over the last few decades. IWC watches alone are the ultimate pinnacle in Swiss precision and are associated with the highest quality materials and the most reliable of mechanical movements available within the industry. Features that have defined the collection are those such as their black ceramic cases which ensure that any glare from the sun is eradicated during a flight, and a hard scratch-resistant housing for the mechanical engine to sit inside, which can withstand extreme G-forces.

IWC’s choice in ceramic and titanium cases led them to create their first ever Ceratanium® case. It was launched in the new Top Gun watch collection released at the start of the year, bringing an extremely corrosion-resistant housing to this line of pilot-friendly tools for the wrist. The cases are also able to withstand salty air, sea air and humid conditions. IWC Schaffhausen patented this new material which enabled them to create a completely black design without needing to coat the case pushers or crown with anything additional, as well as their first watch case made from sand-coloured ceramic to mirror the uniforms worn by the Navy pilots in the U.S Navy.

Within our collection of IWC Schaffhausen Top Gun watches is the Chronograph Top Gun watch (ref: IW389101) which features both a trio of sleek chronograph counters and a display at 3 o’clock for the day and date. At the 12 o’clock location, chronograph minutes are displayed, followed by seconds at 6 o’clock (highlighted by a red hand), and chronograph minutes at 9 o’clock. The rest of the design showcases IWC’s archetypal pilot-inspired dial, with legible white Arabic numerals housed underneath a scratch resistant and anti-glare sapphire crystal glass lens, and clear minute markers around the periphery of the dial. This IWC Top Gun Chronograph is powered by the 69000 calibre, which powers at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 46 hour power reserve. The movement is housed inside a soft-iron inner case that protects against magnetic fields, all whilst strapped to the wrist with a supple and sporty-looking IWC black textile strap.

Our IWC Top Gun Pilot’s watch collection here at Berry’s, also comprises the Pilot’s Watch Automatic Top Gun model (ref: IW326901) which boasts a spacious three handed dial design accompanied by legible Arabic hour markers and a splash of red seen in the discreet Top Gun lettering above the 6 o’clock location. With a diameter of 41mm, space is not only granted for the 32110 IWC-manufactured calibre, but also for the dial itself, which dedicates more space to straight-forward timekeeping. The calibre is a robust automatic movement that provides an impressive 72 hour power reserve and beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour inside its 60 meter water resistant ceramic case. Whether you’re a collector of IWC Schaffhausen watches or a lover of Swiss pilot’s watches, the timepieces from this iconic family are a unique blend of forward-thinking technology and innovative case materials, equipped to perform with precision regardless of any challenge faced.
